Frank Zappa's Roxy & Elsewhere: Troubling Fills in the Air

Discussion on Frank Zappa’s 1974 album Roxy & Elsewhere, as well as some speculation on its influence.

  1. I'm no Zappa historian, and when I saw Chester Thompson playing with Zappa I literally stopped breathing for 15 seconds (I recognized his drumming and his hairline before you verified it for me). I also recognized the signature lick but I couldn't specify Afterglow as the Genesis vehicle for it until you reminded me of it - although I have "attempted" it many times. Great exposition - especially on the drumming/Genesis angle, sir. :-)

  2. I’d say, off the top of my head, that some of the most important women after Ruth would be Dale Bozzio, Suzi Creamcheese, and Moon Unit. Violist Hilary Sturt’s narration of “Food Gathering in Post-Industrial America”, from the Yellow Shark masterpiece is also magnificent. Also, Bianca Odin from the Philly ‘76 band was absolutely brilliant. My all-time favorite Zappa female, though—(after Ruth, of course)...gotta go with teen-age prostitute Lisa Popeil, whose father was filthy rich and invented stuff.
